Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Overview Questions

What is the Virtual RAC 2020?

SCS has been organising the Singtel-Singapore Cancer Society Race Against Cancer annually since 2009. Due to the COVID-19 situation this year, we could not proceed with the physical RAC that was originally scheduled to take place in July 2020, as large-scale sporting events are not allowed to be held, and converted it to a virtual race in September 2020. The RAC is an annual fundraising event organised by SCS to raise funds to support our cancer community through our various programmes and services. Each year, SCS needs to raise about $20m to fund these programmes and services. The target this year is to raise $800,000 from the virtual RAC 2020.

What is a Virtual Race?

A Virtual Race is a race that allows you to participate at any time and any place at your own convenience without having to gather at one event location at a specific date and time, as long as your distance and duration is clocked using a GPS-enabled app (our preferred app is STRAVA) during the race period.

When is the Virtual RAC 2020?

The Virtual RAC 2020 will take place between 19 September 2020, Saturday, 0000hrs and 27 September 2020, Sunday, 2359hrs. This means that your distance can be clocked at any date or time within this race period.

Where is the Virtual RAC 2020?

You can take part in the race at any place of your choice. We recommend that you can take to the park connectors (PCNs) or parks near your homes during this time due to COVID-19. You can even take part in the race within your own homes as long as you are able to track your date/time, distance, duration and route map using STRAVA (GPS-enabled app). Our aim is to cover the whole of Singapore to show the connectedness and unitedness of everyone in support of the cancer community despite COVID-19.

Remember, if you are going out for a walk, jog, or run, please be socially responsible and follow the safe distancing guidelines:
  1. Stay home during this period as far as possible to keep your family and friends safe. If you need to exercise (walk, jog, run), do head to a park or PCN that is in your neighbourhood. If you are heading to the parks, please do so in a group of not more than 5 people. Please observe a safe distance of at least one metre between members of the group, as well as with other park users.
  2. Please visit https://www.onemap.sg/main/v2/nearbyparks to check for a park or https://www.nparks.gov.sg/gardens-parks-and-nature/park-connector-network to check for a PCN in your neighbourhood.
  3. Please visit https://safedistparks.nparks.gov.sg/ to check on the Park Status or Visitor-ship Status of the parks before you go. Please avoid crowded places and choose a timing when there are less people at the venue of your choice.
  4. Park users engaging in sports and physical exercises should observe all safe management measures as stipulated by Sport Singapore. [see link here]

Tracking my Distance

Where can I check my progress against other participants?

You can check the race leaderboard after the challenge starts on 19 September, 0000hrs. Do note that you have to sync your account with Strava for the distance completed to appear on the leaderboard.

My activity does not show up on the race leaderboard or I do not see my username on the race leaderboard after authorising the Organiser to connect to my Strava account.

Participants are required to log into their account to sync their Strava activities for it to appear on the race leaderboard. After syncing, please wait for your distance completed to be uploaded. If any irregularities occur, please email us at rac@singaporecancersociety.org.sg or support@wobs.sg. Please allow up to 48 hours for us to respond.

How can I be sure I'm logging my distance for the challenge?

You will receive an email notification that registration was successful after you have registered. If you have already registered but yet to authorise the Organiser to connect to your Strava account, you will receive an email reminder to do so immediately.

Can I clock in multiple times to add up the distance?

Yes. The beauty of a virtual race is that you can clock the distance anytime and anywhere. Just remember to log the distance with the Strava app, or upload them to Strava if you are using another device to record the distance. Just make sure the devices are Strava-compatible! And sync them weekly (or before 30 September, 2359hrs) for us to capture the data and allow them to appear on the leaderboard.

Can I log my distance using other apps or devices?

We require all participants to log the distance using Strava. You can use tracking devices like Garmin and upload your activities to Strava. If you have logged your activity with another app and not Strava, the system will not recognize the uploaded activity.

Can I add my activities manually?

No, your activity must have GPS tracking and a route in order to count. However, participants who do not wish to connect to Strava or have problems connecting to Strava, they can submit the results via screenshot of approved trackers to rac@singaporecancersociety.org.sg.

The following information is required in the screenshot: Date, Duration, Distance and Category. The organiser reserve the rights to reject any manual screenshot submission that do not have the required information.

Why do some of my activities don't register?

Your distance may be uploaded late (a few days), especially for participants who use tracking devices like Garmin. We advise you to upload your activities as soon as possible.

If your Strava privacy setting is not set to public, our leaderboard will not be able to pull your activities. We advise you to change your privacy settings to public.
Strava web/app → Settings → Privacy → untick ALL checkbox

For other technical issues, please contact us at rac@singaporecancersociety.org.sg or support@wobs.sg with your username and Strava ID where available.

The distance recorded by Strava is inaccurate, can you add the missing distance into that activity?

We are not able to edit the details recorded by Strava. We do advise participants to ensure that their GPS signal is strong throughout and consistently check that Strava is recording.

Is it necessary to use the Strava iphone/android app to record my distance if I have another device such as a Garmin that I normally use?

No, you can continue to use your existing preferred device such as a Garmin Edge to record your distance, as long as you can sync and upload them to Strava. If you use both to record, we will adapt to recognise the distance from only 1 source.
